The rule

From 1 October 2026, a new or returning NSW strata committee member generally must complete the free NSW Fair Trading training within three months of appointment. Check the actual appointment date and any exemption before setting the deadline.

Why it matters

Missing the deadline automatically ends committee membership.

If required training is not completed within three months, the person automatically ceases to be a committee member. Exemptions include members of two-lot strata schemes, strata managing agents, Australian College of Strata Lawyers members and people filling a casual vacancy for less than three months. Community association committees are outside this requirement.

One practical action

For every appointment or reappointment from 1 October 2026, record the appointment date, check exemptions, set the two-month reminder and three-month deadline, and retain the NSW Fair Trading Certificate of Completion with the committee records.

Check your process

Does your committee onboarding process record the training deadline and certificate requirement before the meeting file is closed?
