NSW Strata Committee Training Is Now in Force
Many NSW strata committee members appointed from 1 October 2026 must complete the free mandatory training within three months.
The requirement commenced on 1 October 2026. A new or returning NSW strata committee member generally must complete the free NSW Fair Trading introductory course within three months of appointment. The introductory course is completed once, not every year, and one certificate can cover multiple committees. NSW Fair Trading says additional or different annual training will be announced in 2027.
Missing the deadline automatically ends committee membership.
If required training is not completed within three months, the person automatically ceases to be a committee member. Exemptions include members of two-lot strata schemes, strata managing agents, Australian College of Strata Lawyers members and people filling a casual vacancy for less than three months. Community association committees are outside this requirement.
For every appointment or reappointment from 1 October 2026, record the appointment date, exemption evidence and three-month deadline. Remind the member at least one month before training is due, retain certificates and notices for at least one year, and use the failure-notice and vacancy process if the deadline is missed. Any paid managing-agent help needs express approval, a clear scope and an agreed fee basis.
